SEB RAN INTO HIS DAD in the elevator.

“Your friend’s okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, I think so. Looks like shit, but still seems to be the same guy. You know, his brain’s not—well, not any more scrambled than it was before all this.”

“That’s a relief.” And he sounded like he meant it. He did mean it. If there was anything Seb knew about his dad—about both of his parents—it was that they were genuinely caring people. They’d proved it over and over, showing compassion to others, teaching their kids about social responsibility and giving back to the community—they were good people.

And they wanted their kids to be good people, too. He needed to remember that for the conversation to come.

His mom was in a meeting when the two of them arrived at her office, so they sat in the armchairs outside and waited. Well, they waited for about thirty seconds, and then Seb said, “I’m not going to quit. I understand why you’re worried and I appreciate your concern. We can talk about some ways to make things safer, if you want, or ways to help you understand why this is important to me. But I’m not going to quit.”

His dad looked toward his wife’s office door as if willing it to open up. He wasn’t weak, Seb knew; he was totally capable of making his own decisions. But he was also pretty dedicated to the co-parenting, teamwork approach. “We should wait for your mom,” he said.

“Okay. Maybe she’ll have some good ideas about how to keep me safe; I’m totally interested in hearing those. I’m not trying to be reckless or anything. But I’m not going to let some goons intimidate me. This is Seattle, not Mogadishu. We have police here, and a good legal system.”

“Have the police found anything on this yet?”

Damn. “Not that I’ve heard about. But that doesn’t mean they won’t.”

“And you have reason to believe they’re investigating it seriously?”

“Yeah, of course!” At least, Seb hoped they were.

“Then why not leave it to them?” His father waited a moment to let Seb see the trap he’d stumbled into. “If our system is safe and fair and effective, then there’s no need for you to be involved; you’re redundant. If our system isn’t safe and fair and effective, then you shouldn’t be involved because it’s too dangerous.”

“It’s not black and white,” Seb tried. “There’s no such thing as absolutely safe, or absolutely fair and effective. Right? So… this is quite a safe city, and fair and effective…” He wasn’t sure if he wanted to bring up the next part. He felt hypocritical, somehow, criticizing a system that had helped him so much. But maybe it was all the help he’d gotten that made him the one who should be criticizing it. “At least it’s fair and effective for us. For—you know. For people with money and education and connections and all the rest. People with reliable cars to get them places and safe apartments in secure buildings to come home to.
